A wide range of activities can be performed with this mat to get your students started with programming. The mat is very durable and made with classroom use in mind.

This mat has been developed to allow for open ended activities that can be designed by the teacher or the students. The following Driving Test activity can be used either as a collaborative challenge or assessment tool. The challenge itself is very flexible and is only one suggested activity that can be used with this mat.

Students will need to have a basic understanding of programming their robots to move forward, reverse, turn with varying power levels use the touch, ultrasonic and light sensors.

Student Driving Test using MTA Robotics Challenge MatYour robot is your car and you need to pass your driving test. Build and program a 2 motor robot equipped with a touch sensor, ultrasonic & light sensor .

The light sensor should be positioned at the front of the robot/car. Use a minimum of 2 different power levels controlling the speed of the motors throughout the test. Start the car with a touch sensor. Travel straight to the pedestrian crossing using the the ultrasonic sensor to detect the pedestrian. Wait a minimum of 2 seconds. Travel forward at a safe speed. Follow the road making left hand turns where needed staying within the road lines. Continue past the driveway, reverse park the robot in the driveway and stop using the light/colour sensor to stop the motors.

ExtensionThe test could be made more challenging by introducing obstacles that the robot has to negotiate either by avoiding or going over them. Students could also design their own courses for the rest of the class to try out.

Size: 139 x 100cm.
