Meet Dash! Wonder Workshop Dash robot is an exciting, hands-on learning tool for students in grades K-5! Targeted at teaching creative problem solving and computational thinking, Dash helps students learn fundamental processes relevant for all 21st century skills. Students send commands to the robots to move them, light them up, and have them detect the world around them using 5 free coding applications available on iPad and Android tablets.

Dash can now also be programmed with Swift Playground from Apple. Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary app for iPad that makes learning Swift interactive and fun. It requires no coding knowledge, so it’s perfect for students just starting out. Solve puzzles to master the basics of Swift a powerful programming language created by Apple and used by the pros to build today’s most popular apps. Then take on a series of challenges and step up to more advanced playgrounds designed by Apple and other leading developers. Dash playgrounds challenge you to make the robot speak, sing and respond to sensor inputs to react to its environment.

Dash is an explorer who zips around the room, getting into mischief along the way. Using sensors, Dash can detect objects in front and behind, and hear where you are. This robot has quite the personality and becomes more capable as you program and play. You will find lesson plans and more useful information here: https://teachers.makewonder.com/lessonsLearning Objectives: Teachers use Wonder Workshop Dash & Dot to teach a variety of subject areas including the following:

  • Computational thinking:Analyse problems and design algorithms to program robot actions and reactions using Blockly, a visual drag-and-drop coding tool.
  • Maths: Explore concepts like the number line, geometry, angles, distance, time, and variables.
  • Science:Learn about the scientific method, or program Dash to mimic behaviour in the natural world.
  • Engineering:Develop design thinking skills by building extensions on the robots with LEGO bricks.
  • Creative writing and the arts: Explore storytelling, drawing, and even music.

Dash’s Features:

  • Drive: Dash can drive forward, backward, turn left (spin), and turn right (spin). There are two wheels beneath the left and right side of Dash’s body. You can steer Dash by changing the speed and/or direction of either wheel.
  • Head Motion: Dash can look up (25 degrees), down (10 degrees), left (120 degrees), or right (120 degrees).
  • Lights: There are 12 LEDs in Dash’s eye. In Dash’s ears (E) and chest (C), there are RGB LEDs. In Dash’s tail, there are 2 red LEDs.
  • Sounds: Includes a variety of pre-programmed sounds!
  • Microphone: Dash has 3 microphones, allowing Dash to hear claps and identify the direction of your voice.
  • Distance sensors: Dash 2 distance sensors in front (F) and 1 in back (B), allowing Dash to detect obstacles in front and objects behind with infrared lights.
  • Buttons: Dash has 4 programmable buttons.

Download the 5 free apps from the Apple Store or the Play Store:

  • Go: It’s your mission to teach Dash & Dot how to play. Send Dash on missions to deliver messages, use Dot to act out storybook characters, and go out and explore the world together. Getting started is easy with Go. Go shows you the basic controls on Dash & Dot. This app is a portal to online content and activities.
  • Path: Program Dash to follow a path at the racetrack, on a farm, or in the big city! Unlock special abilities, sounds, and animations as you go forth and explore. When you finish the challenges, try creating your own stories and obstacle courses around your room!Path introduces children to sequences, events, and sensors through its simple draw, drag, and drop interface. Plan, program, and execute an adventure for Dash while learning fundamental concepts of computational thinking.Concepts taught in Path:
    • Algorithm design ” Command sequences ” Control flow ” Sensors and Events ” Problem solving
  • Blocky: Take on coding challenges and make your own programs for Dash & Dot using Blockly. Transform Dot into an alarm, play tag with Dash, or use Dot to control Dash. Programming lets you turn your silliest or most ambitious ideas into reality.Blockly is a drag-and-drop visual programming tool that introduces children as young as 8 to fundamental programming concepts including:
    • Algorithm Design ” Command sequences and control flow ” Conditionals ” Loops ” Sensors and events through creative problem solving
  • Xylo: Conduct a musical performance for family and friends using Dash’s Xylophone! Remake your favourite tunes or channel your inner Beethoven to compose your own songs from scratch.Xylo introduces children to programming through music and play. Start off by composing a musical phrase, and learn the following concepts while Dash performs:- Algorithm design ” Command sequences and control flow ” Loops

Download the lesson plan book to instantly get access to lesson ideas, activities and to find out how Dash can help to integrate cross-curricular topics into your lesson plans. This book provides teachers with ideas on how to integrate Dash & Dot in the classroom for coding as well as other STEM subjects. These activities are designed to encourage students to think in new ways with hands-on application. Will my Device work? Check the list below to make sure your device and OS is currently supported. We are constantly working to add more devices so check back often if you don’t see your device.Apple iOS Devices: Tablets: iPad 3, 4, iPad Air 1, 2, and iPad Mini 1, 2, 3 with iOS 7 and up are all compatible with all 4 apps (Path, Blocky, Xylo and Go) Phones: iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, and iPod Touch 5 with iOS 8 and up are only compatible with the app Go. The other three apps (Blocky, Xylo and Path) are not compatible. Android Devices: Tablets: Nexus 7 (2013)**, Nexus 9, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, Galaxy Tab 3, 8.0, 10.1, Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, 8.0, 10.1, Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, and Galaxy Tab S 8.4, 10.5 with OS version 4.4.2 and up are all compatible with all 4 apps (Path, Blocky*, Xylo and Go) Phones: Galaxy S4, S5 with OS version 4.4.2 and up are only compatible with the app Go. The other three apps (Blocky, Xylo and Path) are not compatible. You may be able to download and use our applications on other iOS and Android tablets and phones, however not all applications will be optimized for these devices. * The current version of Blockly on Android cannot save programs, and doesn’t have pre-loaded default programs. ** The Nexus 7 (2013) can only connect to one robot at a time. We recommend that Nexus 7 users purchase Dash only.
