Black Sock Swamp is a beautifully illustrated and written story that teaches children the importance of mangroves in a small village community. In the book it tells the reader the consequences of destroying a mangrove swamp. The narrator is a child who takes the reader on a first person view of how she loved the swamp and how she loved walking in the squishy mud.

Her grandmother and the older people of the village valued it as a breeding place for mullet which is a fish the villagers relied on every year for food.

However, others neither loved nor valued the swamp and when the swamp was filled in and the site was used for a hotel, everyone was happy except for the grandmother and the child.

The following year, there were less and less mullet in the sea. Which left the villagers no other option but to buy their mullet from the market. Whereas the businessman who ran the hotel made lots of money.
