These insect counters are a set of 72 colourful mini beasts creatures including spiders, beetles, dragonflies, caterpillars and more. Set supplied in a sturdy storage jar as well as coming in 6 different colours; yellow, green, blue, red, orange and purple. The counters measure approximately 2.5 to 5cm.

Use these counters for a wide range of (mathematical) activities. Sort the insect creatures by shape or by colour. Or create a pattern of insects. The counters also invite students to create stories about the mini beasts. The ability to sort objects and classify them according to specific features is an important aspect of early mathematical thinking, along with the development of counting.

The process of counting is a complex one involving building an understanding of the order of number names, the ability to match number words with objects in a collection while understanding the cardinal aspect of a number. As a result the use of materials for counting and sorting assists children in building skills of conservation, classifying, comparing, ordering and patterning. The insect counters are suitable for children from the age of 3 years and above.
