Hammer Tap Game. Tap tap tap! Tap away with our cork and wood game for hours of entertainment! Replicate the cards or make your own colourful creations with all the wooden pieces. This classic hammer and tap activity invites children to pick up the small wooden shapes, position them on the sturdy cork board and gently tap them into place using the child-sized hammer and metal tacks. With a board measuring approximately 19 x 29 cm, 10 pattern cards (around 8 x 13 cm) and 33 wooden shapes to choose from, children can follow the guided designs or experiment with their own imaginative pictures and patterns. As they work, learners naturally refine their fine motor skills, concentration and hand-eye coordination, carefully lining up shapes and tacks before tapping them in. The pattern cards encourage visual discrimination and problem-solving as children match shape, size, rotation and colour to the images shown. Open-ended by design, the Hammer Tap Game also supports creative thinking, storytelling and design as children build scenes, vehicles, houses, people and abstract patterns. Ideal for early primary classrooms, OSHC programs and home learning spaces, this engaging resource provides a satisfying, hands-on way to explore shape, space and composition while developing persistence and pride in completed artworks.

Educational benefits:

  • Develops fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and grip strength as children position shapes and tap in tacks.
  • Encourages creativity and design thinking when children move beyond the pattern cards to create their own pictures and scenes.
  • Builds visual discrimination skills as learners match shapes, colours, positions and orientations to the example cards.
  • Supports concentration, patience and perseverance as children work carefully to complete each picture without dislodging previous pieces.

Classroom ideas:

  • Use the pattern cards in a fine motor or maths rotation, asking students to recreate and then describe the shapes they used.
  • Invite children to design their own pattern cards on paper, then swap and complete each other's designs for an added challenge.
  • Link to storytelling by asking learners to build a scene (e.g. a park, a farm, a space rocket) and then tell or write a story about it.
  • Incorporate positional language ("above" , "next to" , "under" , "on top" , "beside" ) as students describe where they are placing each shape.
