The Wooden Sand & Water Funnel is an engaging outdoor tool that lets children explore fluid dynamics and gravity through hands-on play. Designed to hold and direct sand and water, this funnel provides endless opportunities for children to experiment with flow, motion, and how materials interact as they move through different paths. By observing the movement of sand or water, children develop a deeper understanding of natural forces like gravity, while also strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Crafted from sturdy, weather-resistant wood, the funnel is built to last in outdoor conditions, making it an excellent addition to any play area. Whether used in a sandbox, water table, or garden, this funnel invites individual exploration or group play, encouraging children to test hypotheses and observe the real-world applications of physics concepts.

Classroom Ideas:

  • Experiment with Flow: Set up different stations where children can test how sand and water move through the funnel at varying speeds based on the material or the angle of the funnel.
  • Group Collaboration: Have children work in groups to create different paths or structures for the sand and water to flow through, promoting teamwork and creative thinking.
  • Nature Comparisons: Discuss how funnels in nature, like rivers or the way rainwater flows, relate to what they observe in the sandbox or water table.
  • STEM Challenges: Challenge children to create a system where the funnel directs water or sand in the most efficient way, incorporating engineering and scientific problem-solving skills.

Key Considerations:

  • Suitable for children aged 3 and up
  • Made from durable, weather-resistant wood for long-lasting use
  • Enhances learning of gravity, fluid dynamics, and motion
  • Ideal for outdoor classrooms, sandboxes, and water tables

Timber Maintenance Guide

  1. We recommend to clean your outdoor furniture several times a year. We suggest to use an outdoor wood furniture cleaner and follow their instructions. Also remove any cobwebs, leaves or dirt before cleaning and dry thoroughly in the sun after cleaning. We do not recommend a high pressure washer.
  2. We recommend to sand and oil your furniture as required throughout the year. The weather will deteriorate timber so the location of the furniture and the weather such as rain and humidity will wear timber at different rates. Using a natural furniture oil will help to maintain the beautiful colour of the timber and hold the necessary moisture in the wood. Please follow the manufacturers directions for oiling. Usually only a light sand needed.
  3. If your outdoor furniture gets wet, we suggest that you dry it out in the sun. Therefore helping to prevent mould and wood rot.
  4. For best longevity of your outdoor furniture we also suggest that you keep it undercover or cover it when not in use. If the furniture can be kept under a roof out of direct weather and sun, it will help to make the most out of your furniture.
  5. The metal hardware can become loose over time, so we recommend that you check the screws, hinges and bolts throughout the year. Hence helping to keep the furniture strong and in the best working condition.
Outdoor furniture made from hardwood Eucalyptus and is suitable for outdoor use. However as with all timber, the weather will wear the wood. When left outdoors eucalyptus furniture will naturally weather to a silver grey colour.

You will begin to notice the greying after a few months, depending on the amount of sun and rain your furniture exposed to. You may even notice a few small cracks which is not a structural defect, but a perfectly natural process, as the wood expands and contracts, adjusting to the elements.

Following the above guide on a regular basis will help to maintain the beauty, integrity and strength of the timber and allows you to get the most enjoyment from the furniture.
